Suitability: ★★★★★

Bwindi is a montane rainforest in south-western Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley, ranging from about 1,160 to 2,600 m. It holds nearly half the world's mountain gorillas, and trekking requires permits issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Why Bwindi for families?

  • It is a malaria area, so check with your paediatrician and choose lodges with mosquito nets.
  • A short domestic flight can replace a long road transfer.
  • Some camps and activities have minimum ages, so confirm with the provider before booking.

What awaits you in Bwindi

  • About 459 mountain gorillas, nearly half the world population
  • Gorilla trekking in four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga
  • Over 350 bird species, including Albertine Rift endemics
  • Cultural encounters with Batwa and Bakiga communities
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site

Wildlife you may encounter: mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants and birdlife.

Suggested time on the ground: 2 to 3 days. Daily scheduled flights from Entebbe reach Kihihi and Kisoro airstrips (about 1 hr 10 min), followed by a 4x4 transfer. By road from Kampala it is roughly a full day.

Activities that fit

birdwatching and cultural visits.

When to go

The best period overall is June to August and December to February. For quieter months and often better value, try March to May and November.

The driest months; trails are relatively easier and demand for gorilla permits is high.
